The Department of English Language & Literature, conducted a workshop on “Computational Linguistics” for post-graduate students (M Phil Linguistics & M Phil English Literature). Key computational methods used in linguistics and literature analysis were explored. Guest speaker Muhammad Shoaib Tahir, Corpus and Computational Linguist, explored key computational methods used in linguistics and literature analysis. The session began with an introduction to computational methods for sentiment analysis, focusing on how these techniques can be used to detect emotions such as joy, anger, and sadness in textual data. The students were given hands on practice on applying these methods to better understand the emotional tones embedded in different forms of communication.
The tools introduced during the workshop included Orange, Python libraries such as SpaCy and NLTK, as well as Python for Linguistics. These tools equipped the students with valuable analytical skills, enhancing their ability to analyze language, sentiment, emotion, and dialogue in both literary texts and linguistic data. By providing hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, the workshop prepared students for a variety of career paths. These include fields such as digital humanities, data science, publishing, and media analysis, where the integration of language study and technology is increasingly valued.
