University Medical & Dental College launched “Hepatitis Awareness Society” during a ceremony held in Health Sciences campus, TUF on April 7, 2018. Under the supervision of Prof Dr Tanzeela Khalid, Director Medical Education, Dr Saba Tariq, HoD Pharmacology and Dr Sundus Tariq, Assistant Professor Physiology, this volunteer students’ society will organize regular awareness programs to sensitize the common people to hepatitis. An awareness seminar on the diseases was held on the occasion. Speaking to the audience, chief guest of the event, Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Principal UMDC stressed the need to promote awareness of the viral disease among the masses. He appreciated the efforts of departments of medical education and community medicine, UMDC, in this regard. Prof Dr Shahid Rasool, HOD, Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Madinah Teaching Hospital in his address told that according to medical experts, over 12 million people in Pakistan are infected with hepatitis C virus and the disease is swelling at an alarming rate. Owing to lack of preventive measures and treatment facilities, hepatitis prevalence in Pakistan is the highest on the globe. Dr Shaid Rasool highlighted the causes and preventive measures against the disease. He emphasized the need of early detection and vaccination of hepatitis to control the mortality rate. Prof Dr Tanzeela Khalid, Director Medical Education Prof Dr Zahid Masood, HoD Community medicine and Ayesha Khalid, President UMDC Hepatitis Awareness Society also addressed the audience. A quiz game on hepatitis for the student’s awareness was also conducted.
