World's Anti-microbial Day

From health to food, to the environment, microbes have a role and we highlight and celebrate that on the world’s anti-microbial day on 28 December 2023, each year. It aimed to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance and promote responsible use of antibiotics. The Department of Pathology (BSMLS) organized the World’s Anti-microbial Day with the collaboration of the biotechnology department. The students presented the poster for awareness of antimicrobial resistance. The session was supervised by Dr. Noureen Fatima and Miss Zunaira Nazish.

However, there are various efforts and awareness days organized by the Department of Pathology (BSMLS) which have also focused on antimicrobial stewardship. These initiatives aimed to educate our students to become successful healthcare professionals and to educate them about the importance of preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs and combatting antimicrobial resistance.

AMR is a serious global health threat that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. By dedicating a specific day to antimicrobial awareness, it emphasizes the urgency of addressing this issue on a global scale. Whether we know it or not, microbes are an essential part of everyday life. The main issue nowadays as the resistance against antibiotics is increasing so we need to understand the reason behind it. Unnecessary and disproportionate use of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance. As it destroys normal flora of the body with disease-causing agents. Normal flora is the bacterial population that is present in the body and helps in different mechanisms of the body.

Our mission is to teach and provide a platform for awareness of the use of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, students presented posters and explained the mechanism of antibiotic resistance. The best posters were awarded by 1st, 2nd and 3rd position holders.

The event helped to promote understanding of the threat of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. Increasing public awareness to the students about antimicrobial resistance empowered them to take actions in the world around. Awareness session of Anti-Microbial Day provided information on how individuals can contribute to combating AMR, such as following hygiene practices, understanding the difference between bacterial and viral infections, and advocating for responsible antibiotic use. World's Anti-Microbial Day served as a reminder of the ongoing commitment needed from governments, healthcare systems, industries, and individuals to tackle this pressing public health challenge.
