World Poetry Day Celebration

In honour of World Poetry Day, on 5th April 2024, the Department of English Language and Literature, at The University of Faisalabad Saleem Campus, hosted a captivating poetry competition to discover new talent and recognize outstanding poetic works. This open Mic Session paved an opportunity for attendees to share their own poems or favourite pieces in both English and Urdu genres, where spontaneous and heartfelt performances were presented by students from various academic disciplines. The event occurred under the distinguished patronage of renowned poet, Chief Guest Dr Ghulam Murtaza, Chairperson, Department of English, GCUF, and presence of Dr Nailah Riaz, Head Department of English Language and Literature, The University of Faisalabad graced the event.

 

Participants from diverse departments including BS Biotechnology, MPhil English Literature, DPT, BS Optometry, BS English, BSDS, BSN, BBA, Pharmacy, BS Microbiology, and DPH showcased their poetic prowess in both English and Urdu Genres in a celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity. Many of the contestants used their words to comment on social issues, politics, and the human condition, sparking important conversations and debates. Some of the contestants also presented their resilient voice for the people of Gaza. Their voices articulated the experiences, dreams, aspirations, and the spirit of Gaza community.

It encouraged the students to appreciate the beauty of language and recognize the enduring legacy of poets who have enriched our world with their creativity and insight. The competition not only highlighted the talent within the academic community but also served as a platform for creative expression and appreciation of the poetic arts. This day recognized the unique ability of poetry to capture the human spirit, promote linguistic diversity, and foster creative expression. It encouraged the students to navigate through the complexities of modern life, and to make them believe that poetry remains a timeless and universal form of expression that connects us all.

 

After the presentations of the poetics works by all contestants, Dr Ghulam Murtaza presented his appreciative remarks to all of the participants as each poem submitted to this competition had been a testament to the creativity, passion, and unique voice of creators. He also narrated his beautiful poetic works in front of the students and introduced new trends and genres in the field of Language and Literature. At the end of the occasion, Dr Ghulam Murtaza and Dr Nailah Riaz presented the awards to the winners
