Workshop on “Biological Data Retrieval & Molecular Phylogenetics”

The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology conducted a comprehensive one-day workshop titled "Biological Data Retrieval & Molecular Phylogenetics" under the kind supervision of Dr Shaista Shafiq, Head, Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology. Spearheaded by Ms Sannia Iqbal, the Focal Person of the Event Organizing Committee, the workshop aimed to familiarize participants with vital bioinformatics tools and methodologies, emphasizing the retrieval of biological data from online repositories and the construction of molecular phylogenetic trees.

This enriching event convened undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, and researchers from diverse disciplines within the life sciences. The program featured a series of engaging sessions, including:

  • Demonstrations on accessing and extracting genomic and proteomic data from online databases.
  • Step-by-step tutorials on sequence alignment techniques and the development of molecular phylogenetic trees.
  • Interactive discussions on the relevance and applications of phylogenetics in contemporary biological research.

Distinguished speaker Dr Muhammad Rizwan Javed, Associate Professor, Bioinformatics & Biotechnology Department, GCUF shared his esteemed academic and professional insights, underscoring the pivotal role of molecular phylogenetics in elucidating evolutionary relationships, tracking disease outbreaks, and conserving biodiversity.
