TUF Rehabilitation Society commemorated World Physical Therapy Day with a dedicated community outreach initiative at Old Age Home Aafiyat, Faisalabad, aligning with this year’s global theme: “The Role of Physical Therapy and Physical Activity in Healthy Aging, with a Focus on Preventing Frailty and Falls.” Recognizing the vital role of physiotherapy in enhancing independence and quality of life among older adults, the team organized a comprehensive assessment and awareness campaign that engaged 24 senior residents.
The campaign featured essential health screenings, including pulse monitoring and blood pressure assessments, to support early detection and proactive health management. Balance evaluations were conducted using the Y-Balance Test, revealing that 6 individuals scored ≤50%, and 18 scored ≤85% or exactly 85% — results indicating varying degrees of coordination imbalance and potential fall risk. Frailty assessments, carried out using the FRAIL Scale, identified 8 individuals as non-frail, 10 as pre-frail, and 6 as frail, providing a foundation for early, targeted interventions to promote resilience and mobility.
The session concluded with a structured therapeutic exercise program aimed at improving mobility, muscle strength, and balance. The regimen included marching, neck and hamstring stretches, shoulder squeezes, trunk flexion, resistance training, tandem walking.
This initiative contributed meaningfully toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Well-being, Reduced Inequalities, and Sustainable Cities and Communities.
The day also included a campaign targeting university management, emphasizing proper posture, ergonomics, and desk exercises to reduce musculoskeletal issues from prolonged sitting. Live demonstrations and custom-designed exercise guides were provided as daily reminders to encourage healthier work habits.
A meeting with Prof Dr Aman Ullah Malik, Rector, TUF, highlighted physical therapy’s role in enhancing quality of life and healthy aging. Overall, the campaign demonstrated how simple lifestyle changes can improve ageing and occupational health, reinforcing both institutional and global health goals.
