CME-Accredited Summer Course on Wound Management

The Department of Dermal Sciences at The University of Faisalabad, under the esteemed leadership of Prof. Dr. Tanzeela Khalid (Dean of Clinical Research), successfully conducted the 24-hour CME-accredited Summer Course titled “Wound Management: Principles and Practice.” The multi-day academic event brought together experienced clinicians and motivated participants for a series of insightful, hands-on learning sessions aimed at advancing clinical proficiency in wound care.

The course commenced with Dr. Kinza Arif (MS Wound Management, DDS), who delivered foundational modules focusing on the principles of wound care. Her dynamic teaching style, rooted in clinical and academic expertise, translated complex concepts into clear, practice-ready knowledge. Through case-based discussions and interactive engagement, she laid a strong groundwork for the learning journey that followed.

Building upon this momentum, Dr. Hamza (MBBS, MRCS [Edinburgh], IIWCC [Canada]) led sessions centered on wound infection recognition, diagnostic strategies, and principles of wound bed preparation. His teaching was enriched by real-world clinical scenarios and peer discussion, which allowed participants to develop a stronger grasp of diagnosis, assessment, and management in practical settings.

The course segment concluded with a comprehensive session by Prof. Dr. Zahid Nagra (FCPS, HOD Plastic Surgery, MTH-UMDC), who explored the fundamentals of wound dressing, including selection criteria for various dressing types. With the aid of clinical visuals and demonstrations, he highlighted the use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and its real-life applications. The session also included a hands-on segment, where participants practiced wound cleaning techniques and dressing applications, supported by a case-based discussion that reinforced the course objectives.

Throughout the segment, the emphasis remained on bridging theoretical concepts with clinical application, enabling participants to enhance their diagnostic reasoning, decision-making, and procedural confidence.

The Department of Dermal Sciences extends its heartfelt appreciation to all guest speakers for their expert contributions and to the participants for their enthusiastic engagement. This course marks a significant step forward in strengthening wound care education and clinical competence in the field.

Day 5 of the 24-hour CME-accredited summer course on “Wound Management: Principles and Practice” continued with skill-based learning.

The session was led by Dr. Hamza (MBBS, MRCS [Edinburgh], IIWCC [Canada]) and focused on hands-on suturing skills. During this practical session, participants were trained in various suturing techniques, refining their hand movements and stitch placement using simulation kits designed to mimic real-tissue conditions.

The experience was further enhanced by audio-visual resources provided for independent home practice, helping students reinforce their newly acquired skills beyond the classroom. The interactive environment enabled learners to gain confidence in basic wound closure techniques—an essential component of wound management.

The Department acknowledges the valuable teaching efforts of Dr. Hamza and appreciates the active participation of the students as the summer course advances toward its goal of promoting clinical excellence in wound care.

Day 6 of the 24-hour CME-accredited Summer Course on “Wound Management: Principles and Practice” was conducted on 25th July 2025.

The session was led by Prof. Dr. Zahid Nagra (HOD, Plastic Surgery, MTH, UMDC), who delivered an insightful and in-depth lecture on burn management. The session covered the types of burns, along with detailed guidance on burn management at different levels and stages—from immediate first response to advanced care strategies.

To support and enrich the lecture, audio-visual aids were used alongside case discussions, allowing students to apply their learning in simulated clinical contexts. This multifaceted approach ensured better comprehension and retention of critical concepts in burn care.

The Department of Dermal Sciences extends sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Zahid Nagra for his hard work, dedication, and delivery of such a knowledgeable and impactful lecture. The course continues to empower future clinicians with essential wound care skills and knowledge.

The Day 7 session of the 24-Hour CME-Accredited Summer Course on “Wound Management: Principles and Practice” was led by Dr. Hamza (MBBS, MRCS [Edinburgh], IIWCC [Canada]) and focused on “Sutures and Their Types”, emphasizing the selection and application of sutures based on wound condition and anatomical site.

In addition to a comprehensive overview of suture materials and techniques, Dr. Hamza introduced advanced suturing methods, followed by a hands-on simulation-based practical session. This interactive component allowed students to develop precision and control in suture placement, significantly enhancing their procedural competence in wound closure.

The Department extends its appreciation to Dr. Hamza for his exceptional teaching, which continues to enrich the clinical skills and decision-making capabilities of participants as the course progresses.

The 24-hour CME-accredited summer course on “Wound Management: Principles and Practice” concluded successfully by the Department of Dermal Sciences, with an intensive academic session led by Dr Salman Azhar, Associate Professor of Medicine, MTH. He delivered an insightful lecture on the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and its progression to diabetic foot complications, followed by a hands-on segment on neurological examination techniques.

Dr Kinza Arif, MS Wound Management, DDS, simplified key wound care concepts with her expert-led teaching, while Dr M Hamza Rana (MBBS, MRCS, Edinburgh), (IIWCC, Canada), addressed infection diagnostics and wound bed preparation. Prof Dr Zahid Nagra, FCPS, HOD Plastic Surgery, MTH-UMDC, shared critical insights on wound dressing selection and application.

The closing ceremony was graced by distinguished guests including Prof Dr Aman Ullah Malik, Rector, TUF, Dr M Akram Malik, Principal, UMDC, Prof Dr Tanzeela Khalid, Dean of Clinical Research, Prof Dr Abdul Wahid, Director Academics, TUF, Prof Dr Khalid Mehmood, HOD Pediatric Surgery, MTH, and Prof Dr Shirza Nadeem, HOD Forensic Medicine, UMDC, marking the successful culmination of an enriching academic journey.
