Awareness Seminar on Breast Cancer

It is estimated that each year more than 83,000 cases of breast cancer are reported in Pakistan. Approximately 40,000 women die every year due to this deadly disease. In Pakistan, one in nine women develops breast cancer at some stage of their lives. Every year, thousands of females lose their lives due to a lack of awareness. Several women do not share their health issues with others and are shy about going for any kind of breast examination. Not only older women, but it has affected younger women too. Around 77 % of women with breast cancer are over the age of 50.

Department of Community Medicine, in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital Lahore and Pink Ribbon Campaign organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education about Breast Self-Examination (BSE), breast cancer signs and symptoms, and treatment of breast cancer.

 
 

Dr. Maira Dastageer, Medical Representative of Shaukat Khnum Memorial Cancer Hospital, explained to the seminar participants the importance of early detection in saving lives. If detected early, breast cancer has a 100% cure rate. However, in late stages, chances of survival significantly decrease. During her talk with the students, through pictures, she educated them about the technique of Self Breast Examination and clarified various myths associated with breast cancer.

This was followed by Question/Answer Session. Prof Dr. Saira Saleem, Head of Breast Surgery Department & UK trained Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Madina Teaching Hospital Faisalabad, highlighted various treatment modalities available at various stages of breast cancer. She added that all diagnostic tests and surgical treatment facilities are available in Madina Teaching Hospital for breast cancer. Residents of Faisalabad don't want to go ,any other city for breast surgery and reconstruction of breast through implants. She also reiterated the importance of early detection for better prognosis after surgery.

 

Students of 4th year MBBS, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Pharmaceutical Sciences enthusiastically participated in the seminar. Community Services society of The University of Faisalabad presented a video documentary which depicted their efforts to raise breast cancer awareness among various schools in Faisalabad. Skit was presented by students of Nutrition & Dietetics which beautifully explained the stigma associated with disease. Prizes were distributed among the winners of an abstract painting competition organized to highlight breast cancer's drastic effects.
