Awareness seminar on “Newborn Screening for Various Clinical Disorders”

Timely diagnosis and initiation of treatment of serious diseases in newborns can prevent serious consequences in later life like mental retardation and other organ damage. Keeping in view this background, an awareness seminar on Newborn screening for various clinical disorders was organized by the Department of Pediatrics, UMDC/Madina Teaching Hospital on 26th March, 2022 at Ali auditorium, Health Sciences wing, TUF.

The seminar was largely attended by the faculty members of Pakistan Pediatric Association, faculty members UMDC, the medical students and paramedical staff members. The clinical significance of timely diagnosis of serious illnesses like congenital hypothyroidism, inborn errors of metabolism was highlighted. The seminar was concluded by the interactive session in the form of panel discussion by the clinical experts including Prof Dr Hina Ayesha, Chairperson Pediatrics Department and Pro VC FMU, Prof Dr Aisha Sajid, HOD Pediatrics MTH, Dr Arshad Farooq, Vice President PPA Punjab, Dr Nagina Shahzad, Pediatric Gastroenterologist Children Hospital Faisalabad, Dr Ahmad Umair Virk Pediatric Neurologist Children Hospital Faisalabad, Dr Ali Raza and Dr Imran Hussain from ZB Foundation Islamabad. They discussed the practical strategies to overcome the challenges regarding newborn screening process. Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman, Rector TUF reinforced the theme and awarded shields to the participants.
