Medical education in Pakistan, since independence has been the domain of public sector, changing trends in medical education around the world and immense pressure of quality treatment has paved way for private sector to play its part in the field. Faisalabad being the industrial capital of the country had only one Medical College and only two major hospitals to cater to the health and educational needs of over 6 million people.

Madina Foundation, following the vision of its founder Chairman Mian Muhammed Saleem (Late) 'Industry, Service & Education', established Medical College in 2003 to fill this vacuum in the medical education in Faisalabad. Since beginning, the College has strived hard and under the able, dynamic leadership and guidance of our present Chairman, Mian Muhammad Hanif, has achieved unique honors and distinction. Another distinct feature of the college is that it is a Medical & Dental College for girls only. The College has hired the services of eminent medical professionals from around the country.

Madina Teaching Hospital

MTH is a General Hospital with 600 beds, attached to the University Medical and Dental College (UMDC), and The University of Faisalabad (TUF), was established 30 years back with vision of commitment, service and quality healthcare delivery to underprivileged cross section area of our society. MTH is recognized and approved by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), University of Health Sciences (UHS), College of Physician and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) as a teaching hospital for Graduates and Post Graduate programs. Hospital is licensed by Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC). Dedicated team of qualified and experienced doctors, nurses and paramedics are working round the clock to fulfill its mission towards continuous delivery of services and healthcare facilities among the ailing humanity. Being teaching hospital, it is providing state-of-the-art teaching facilities and infrastructure to the students of MBBS, BDS, PharmD, Physical Therapy, Optometry, Diet and Nutritional Sciences, Medical Imaging Sciences, Medical Lab Sciences, Dermatological Sciences and Nursing Programs. Department of Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy is one of the most established department of University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad having a covered area more than 5900 sq ft. The building comprises of air-conditioned, well maintained and well equipped dissection hall, lecture theatre, Museum, and Histology laboratory. Anatomy is one of the major subject taught to MBBS and BDS students right from the beginning. It is a fact filled subject full of Greek and Latin terms. The curriculum of Anatomy comprises of four basic disciplines.

Gross Anatomy

Is the macroscopic study of human body carried out by dissection on cadavers by the students under supervision of experienced teachers. Study of skeleton, models and X rays enables the students to apply Anatomical knowledge later on to medical diagnosis.


Is the Microscopic Anatomy in which study of cells and there organization in to the tissues and organs is carried out. Students themselves learn to use microscope and study microscopic appearance of normal tissues. It enables the students to diagnose the diseased tissue for the normal in Histopathology.

Development Anatomy

(Embryology): Covers the principles of reproduction and fetal growth and development, including explanations of various structural relationships in the human body and developmental anamolies. Students use 3D simulated films of embryo development on computer and multimedia.


Is the study of Anatomical organization of Brain and Peripheral nervous system Competent and highly qualified teaching faculty is present to teach all discipines of Anatomy. Teaching is carried out in the form of Lectures, Practicals, Tutorials on board, multimedia and overhead projector. At the end of every topic special emphasis is laid on clinic-anatomicalaspects. The PBL (Problem Based Learning) sessions, presentations and regular class evaluation tests are also carried out oncompletion of one term.

Department of Physiology

The study of Physiology covers the function and behavior of living systems from sub cellular and cellular levels to, organ function and body as a whole. The interaction of living organisms with the environment concept of biological control of systems, and biophysics of cell membranes would be given special emphasis.

The study of the physiological functions of major organs and systems of the body would be dealt with special emphasis on the functions of behavior, internal homeostasis, voluntary and involuntary motor control. Work in the laboratory also include in-video study of organ functions, hands on advanced recording and monitoring equipment and the techniques will be arranged through the year of study.

Practical's in physiology are demonstrated on actual machines, measuring pulmonary, muscular and nerve functions. These are aided by 3D computers modules and promote patriotism in addition to obtaining clinical training.

Department of Bio-Chemistry

Laboratory practical classes are held to assist in elucidating the concepts discussed in lectures and seminars. Students will be introduced to methods of biochemical practical, relevant to clinical sciences. They will also be introduced to the concepts of chemical pathology, in which measurement of bio-molecules is used for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease states.

Modern techniques used in the clinical service and basic research laboratories will be introduced with hands on various procedures to familiarize the students with scientific basis of modern methods along with their limitations and costs.

Department of Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the extension of Biochemistry and Physiology. It is the study of drugs that bring, “Change in biological functions throughtheir chemical actions”.

Pharmacology embraces the knowledge of history, sources, properties, administration, absorption, distribution, mechanism of action,biotransformation, elimination, therapeutic uses & adverse effects of drugs.

Department of Pathology

Pathology is concerned with tissue structure and function in disease process and associated clinical signs and symptoms. It is thus thebridging discipline involving both basic science & clinical practice. The subject of Pathology is covered in two years (3rd year & 4th year). In 3rd year General Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology are taught. In 4th year Special Pathology, Chemical Pathology,Histopathology, and Haematology are covered. The department is also conducting sessions of 2nd year BDS.

The department has an adequate slide bank and gross specimen collection for the teaching purposes. This department is also equipped with a Penta Head with LCD display screen and a bihead microscopy for proper explanation of the microscopic slides. Individual student binocular microscopes are also available for proper training. The department also has two labs along with experienced teachers and technical staff.

The specialized diagnostic work in the field of Histopathology, Hematology, Clinical Pathology and Microbiology is done on routine basis.The department is also planning to start post graduate training in this subject.

Department of Forensic Medicine

Law and medicine have been inter related and inter dependent since antiquity. Medical aspect of law known as Forensic Medicine involves application of medical knowledge to resolve legal issues. In our present medico legal set up the position of medico legal officer is of crucial importance.

He is the one to perform all sorts of medico legal examinations including autopsy, medico legal investigation, prepare & issue medico legal certificate.

Accordingly a medical student should have a comprehensive knowledge, skill and training in the subject which includes legal system of Pakistan, law in relation to medical man, personal identity, and diagnoses of death, general traumatology fire arm injuries, blast injuries,sexual offences and General & Special Toxicology.

Students are given practical training by taking them to mortuary and medico legal clinics under supervision of trained staff

Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine is geared up to prepare the students to become Community-Oriented Physicians and thereby contribute effectively to the Healthcare system of Pakistan. This subject is taught during first four years of MBBS program and professional examination is conducted by the University of Health Sciences Lahore by the end of 4th year. Community Medicine includes the study and application of a wide range of Social Sciences, Concepts of Health Economics, Human Behavior, Socioanthropology and Social determinants of Health and Disease.

The study of Immunology, Health Education, Reproductive Health, Child Survival, Communicable and Non Communicable Diseases, Health Information & Management System, Research Methodology, Epidemiology, Demography and Biostatistics is introduced at appropriate stages.

Emphasis is given on the Planning and Management of Primary Health Care System. Students are involved in supervised research work under the guidance and supervision of our staff. Carry home assignments, field visits to conduct survey are mandatory. Subject is taught in first four years of MBBS program during this period Formative and Summative evaluation is done during the whole academic years. By the end of academic year the student is able to recall his knowledge(C-1), apply that knowledge and have problem solving ability (C-3).

Most Modern teaching methodologies and tools are used. Emphasis is more on interactive learning and real life scenarios. The Department has staff qualified locally and from abroad. Further, the department has one of the most beautiful Museums among all the Medical Colleges of Pakistan. The Department has academic linkages with The Flinders University of South Australia & Johns Hopkins University MD USA. A very strong collaboration between Department of Community Medicine and World Health Organization (WHO) exists.

It is evident by the large number of WHO publications available in the department, Books for departmental library and visits of WHO focal persons to update students on the various Public Health issues. Guest speakers from WHO visit the Department time to time on our special request. They deliver lecture on various aspects of Nutrition & other issues of Public Health importance. Guest Speakers from WHO are qualified from University of Sydney, Australia and University of North Carolina USA.

Department of Medicine

The principle objective of this course is to educate students through modern means to arrive at a diagnosis and to know the proper management of the disease process, based on physiological, anatomical and pathological foundation which was laid in pre-clinical study years. Students are taught to collect information through history taking, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation. They learn to make differential diagnosis and medical decision for continued evaluation and therapy of patients. The curriculum is designed to provide maximum flexibility. The Department of Medicine offers an extremely broad range of advance clinical clerkship in general medicine and sub specialties. The students are part of an integrated ward team to apply and extend their clinical skills, medical knowledge and judgment for the care of patients assigned to them under the direct supervision of senior doctors. In addition to regular clinical sessions, seminars, medical audit meetings and case presentations ensure the students participation in all learning activities

Department of Surgery

The department of Surgery at UMDC, Faisalabad is a dedicated & developed department. It not only delivers knowledge and skill toundergraduate & post graduate medical students but also inculcates in them an empathetic attitude & dense of responsibility through a pre-defined curriculum. The department is well recognized by PM&DC for undergraduate training & by CPSP for post graduate training.

Department transfers information to students not only by lectures & ward training but also arranges short group discussions, symposia,seminars & internet facilities to develop them into an independent & self motivated adult learner. Department of surgery is also doing a lot of research work & 5 papers have been published in PMDC recognized journal last year. Department of surgery provides its services round the clock to elective and emergency patients. Special attention is given to self esteem of the patients so that they do not feel humiliated. All the services are free of any cost as Madina Foundation is bearing all the costs of these needy patients.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Obstetrics and Gynaecology courses are designed to educate students about male and female reproductive physiology in infancy, childhood and adolescence, reproductive endocrinology during menstruation, management of pregnancy and delivery and understanding of changes in postmenopausal years.

The program includes management of normal and abnormal obstetrical conditions, the anatomical and physiological variants following child birth and gynaecological abnormalities. The emotional aspects of genital development prenatal and intranatal abnormalities and oncological aspects of reproductive tract are also covered.

Process of labor, delivery and post delivery care of patients will also be taught. Students will be responsible for the preliminary history and examination of selected gynaecological patients, assist in gynaecological operations and participate in postoperative care. They will learn to carry out investigations and to perform minor operations.

Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology is equipped with state of the art gadgets. The department has facilities of Corneal transplant Surgery,Retinal surgery, Yag Laser. photodisruption and Green Laser photocoagulation and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography.

The department is also recognized for postgraduate training by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and Royal College of Surgeons, England. The clinical teaching of undergraduates starts in third year. This includes tutorials, discussions, observing patients, basics of eye including the anatomy, physiology, pathology and clinical methods.

During the fourth year, main emphasis is on eye diseases with relation to clinical methods, patient examination, tutorials and discussionsare also dealt with.

Department of ENT

Education in ENT begins with out-patient observation, in patient care, attending operation theatre and going through clinico-pathologic conferences, where students participate through case presentation. The department organizes seminars and tutorials on common ENT problems.

The course starts during the third year MBBS, which includes, tutorials and discussions, observing patients and basics of ENT including anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and clinical methods are taught. During fourth year MBBS, main emphasis is on ENT diseases with relation to clinical methods, different diagnostic modalities and treatment protocol. Test at the end of posting including MCQ's oral and clinical examination are taken.

Department of Paediatrics

The clinical training in Paediatric department provides experience in Paediatric wards, nurseries and outpatient clinics. The goal of this training is to enhance students' clinical skill through personal experience and responsibility for patient's care. The students are given an opportunity to participate in seminars and clinical meetings.

Department of Anesthesia

Training is given in administration and management of all types of general and local anesthesia for surgical procedures. Necessary skills in resuscitation and airway management of unconscious patients are taught to the medical students

Department of Psychiatry / Behavioural Sciences

Special attention is paid to the understanding of common psychological problems as seen in clinical practice and attention is also given to community psychiatry, where medical students participate to gain clinical experience on psychiatric patients. They learn to take case history and conduct mental status examination. Differential diagnosis and treatments are discussed.

Department of Urology

Urology is an offshoot of general surgery and diseases of urogenital system are dealt in this field. This is one of the fastest growing fieldsof medicine. Majority of Urological procedures are dealt with endoscopic invasive techniques, dialyses, renal transplantation, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL), Uretero renoscopy (URS), intracoporeal litholopaxy, PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) are the new emerging techniques with TURP and Optical internal Urethrotomy are relatively older techniques.

Undergraduate and post graduate students attend the OPD, Indoor and Operation theater in small groups for interactive sessions,Clinical demonstration and observation as well as assistant to Urological procedure. Department is fully equipped with latest equipment for majority of Urological procedures.

Department of Radiology

The Department of Radiology provides signposting imaging services to the patients of all age groups from new born to geriatrics, in patients as well as ambulatory patients. Radiology Department of Madina Teaching Hospital is working under supervision of Asst Prof Dr Nayab Alia, FCPS Radiology. Radiology Department is giving basic diagnostic facilities like X-ray, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopic contrast studies like Barium Enemia, swallow, meal, small bowl series, IVU, Sinogram, Fistulogram, Urethrography etc.

Color Doppler ultrasound has now entered as modality with multiple probes for small parts ultrasound like thyroid, breast and scrotum etc and Trasvaginal sonography. The Spiral CT Scan is going to be installed in near future. The department of Radiology has always been committed to development of newer modalities. In near future, Inshaallah, we will introduce Mammography, CR system and MRI to provide latest diagnostic facilities to in-patients and out-patients. The patients load is increasing day by day in this Hospital and work of radiology is also increasing. 11036 X Rays and 4010 Ultrasound has been done in previous 6 months.

Department of Orthopedics

The Department of Orthopaedics Surgery starts its teaching in 3rd professional MBBS. In our department we care for adult and children with severe musculoskeletal injures as well as those who have chronic problems and complications of previous injuries. The department has a full-fledged outpatient department. The ward is well-staffed and has all the instruments necessary for handling simple to compound fracture cases. Renowned orthopaedics specialists, plaster technicians and support personnel like nurses take care of the patients in the wards. The operation theaters are fully functional and several types of operations take place with excellent outcomes.

Department of Dermatology

Dermatology, the study of skin diseases is introduced in final year MBBS, as a part of allied medical subjects. The theoretical aspects are dealt with in lectures, with special focus on patients. They not only learn how to diagnose and manage various skin diseases, but also experience how to counsel the patients with sympathy and care.

During their stay in the ward, a hand on experience of various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures carried out in dermatology is provided. Special emphasis is placed on their grooming as good future clinicians.

Department of Medical Education

The Medical Education Department has been recently established at University Medical and Dental College under instructions from University of Health Sciences.

The University of Health Sciences Department of medical education looks after development and updating of medical courses and curricula to be taught at medical colleges. It also guides on methodology of teaching and instructs on latest techniques in medical teaching including problem oriented learning. It holds workshops, seminars and lectures by the experts in the field. The department of medical education at University Medical and Dental College is acting on similar lines and striving to achieve excellence in medical education and provide the community, with doctors and dentists not only better equipped with knowledge of the disease, and patient psychology but also more aware of the issues of public health. In other words the future doctor we expect to produce will be better armed with medical expertise and communication skills and should be able to stand out among the best in the world.

We believe that the universities and medical colleges should not only impart knowledge but also should create new knowledge. To this end the department of medical education is endeavoring to launch various research projects under the guidance of various heads of departments in the college. The students shall also learn some basic techniques of research methodology and how to compile the results of research and draw.
