Tobacco is responsible for approx 80,000 deaths annually in Pakistan directly or indirectly. It was major cause of lung cancer and heart diseases globally in addition to many other diseases attributed to smoking. This was disclosed by Professor Dr Zahid Masood in a seminar to mark the “No tobacco day” at The University of Faisalabad.
Dr Zahid Masood, Head Department of Community Medicine, UMDC said that according to State Bank report Pakistanis spent Rs. 250 billion on over 64 billion cigarettes in the financial year 2014. The number of young female smokers in Pakistan had jumped to 16.3% from 6% in recent years. According to a study conducted in Pakistan frequency of shisha smoking among students was 19.7%. Smoking Shisha for an hour was equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes in the same time. In countries like Pakistan a single cigarette pack was cheaper than a loaf of bread. Consequently smoking was getting popular among youth due to its easy availability and affordability, he added. Referring to a study published in world known research journal he said that death rate among smokers in age group of 30 to 69 years was two to three times higher than who never smoked leading to reduction in their life span by ten years. According to a report released by Pakistan Pediatric Association, the smokers of the low socio-economic group spent 25% of their total household income on cigarettes. He further added.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Rafshan Sadiq, Head of Oncology at PINUM, Faisalabad said that lung cancer was one of most common cancers in males and had strong correlation with smoking. She also spoke about the harmful effects of smoking on fetus during pregnancy. Chief Guest of the seminar, Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, TUF said that there was dire need to educate people on harmful effects of smoking on individuals and their families. He appreciated the efforts of Government of Punjab to address the menace of shisha smoking. Earlier Prof Dr Abdul Haq Director ORIC expressed his views. Dr Uzma gave the overview and spoke on the theme of No tobacco day. A large number of students and faculty members attended the seminar.
School of Interior Design, TUF organized a seminar in context of “World Interior Design Day” in Health Sciences Campus on May 25, 2017. Renowned architect Ms Zahra Khan Afridi, Asst Professor, Department of Architecture, University of Lahore and architect Ms Farhana Amjad, Asst Professor, Department of Interior Design, Lahore College for Women University were the guest speakers. Ms Zahra Khan delivered a lecture on “Envisioning the Future of the Interior Design Industry” while Ms Farhana Amjad gave a comprehensive talk on “Future of Interior Design”.
Earlier, Ms Nijah Hamid, Coordinator, School of Interior Design briefed the audience about the purpose of the seminar and highlighted the performance of the School since its establishment.
On this occasion, an exhibition of projects made by students of BSID was also organized. Students worked on novel ideas and developed a variety of feasible projects of interior design, showcased in the exhibition, illustrating their talent. Mr Hamid Nawaz Sheikh, Controller Examinations, TUF presented University mementos to the guest speakers.
ICT R&D provided funding for four outstanding projects of TUF in 2016. Out of these four projects, one outstanding project named as “Design and simulation of fully automated fire tube boiler using PLC” was also selected and invited by ICT R&D to participate in national level final year projects competition held in Margalla hotel Islamabad on May 18-19, 2017 from the platform of ministry of information technology.
In this competition, 34 projects and 72 private and public sector universities from all over the country participated. Our project, which was supervised by Engr Awais Ahmed Cheema and prepared by BEE student, Mr Hassan Sarwar, stood first from all over the Punjab and 3rd from all over the country. ICT R&D gave away the prize money of Rs 50,000/- to the supervisor and Rs 200,000/-to the student, Mr Hassan Sarwar.
The students of School of Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Sciences, The University of Faisalabad, Engineering Campus participated in Mega Event GOONJ XTC SUPER GEAR, 2017, held at National Textile University, Faisalabad on 19-20th may, 2017. More than 30 Universities from all over the Pakistan participated in the event.
The students from School of Computational Sciences won 1st prize in Brain Battle, Scavenger Hunt, Video Graphy. The students from School of Electrical Engineering won 1st prize in spoon race, table tennis (double) and 2nd position in table tennis (single). The student from School of Civil Engineering hold 2nd position in Calligraphy and overall got General Trophy.
The Rector, The University of Faisalabad, Dr. Abdul Majeed awarded the students with Trophies, shields, certificates and appreciated all the students for their performance.
A mega event “TechHawks 2017” was organized by the students of The University of Faisalabad in Engineering Campus on May 10-12, 2017. Students from different Universities from all over Pakistan participated in more than 30 events including seminars, workshops, projects competitions, e-gaming, web developing, speed programming, Social events and sports and enjoyed three days of fun and zest.
A Continued Medical Education (CME) activity titled; ‘‘Laboratory Diagnosis of Chronic Hepatitis C and Population Based Cancer Registration” was held in UMDC Faisalabad on May 20, 2017. The event was held by the Department of Pathology, UMDC in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center Lahore.
A large number of medical graduates and healthcare providers from the renowned institutes of city attended the event. The formal beginning of the session was followed by the enlightening talk of Dr Farhana Badar Senior Biostatistician & Cancer Epidemiologist; Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center. She presented an overview of the cancer situation in Pakistan especially in Punjab. She also introduced various methodologies available and types of cancer registries. An important content of her knowledgeable presentation was the proforma to get enrolled as a member of cancer registry program and another performa for the patient registry. She shared the cancer data collected from different districts in the year 2015-2016.
The second guest speaker Dr Imran S Chaudhry delivered lecture on “Laboratory Diagnosis of Viral Hepatitis”. He discussed almost every available technique starting from routine blood tests, serologic tests, nucleic acid based tests and genotyping tests for diagnosis of viral hepatitis. He emphasized the confirmation of infection in specific situations during the disease course along with false positive and false negative cases. When the treatment must be started and what appropriate treatment should be started.
A healthy discussion by a panel of the legends; Prof Dr Naeem Ahmad, Prof Dr Akmal Sharif and Assist Prof Dr Shahid Rasool along with Dr Imran S Chaudhry, in the field of gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary system was held in the end. All the participants and students talked about their queries very enthusiastically. Every question was discussed in detail by the panel of four heading persons.
Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences along with Mr Hamid Nawaz Sheikh, Controller Examinations, TUF distributed the University mementos to the guest speakers and members of panel discussion. In concluding remarks, Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed appreciated the worthy speakers and the organisers especially the department of Pathology.
A Mehfi e Mushaira on the “Seerat of Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam Abdul Qadir Jilani (Razi Allah Ta’ala Anho)” was organized by the Religious Society, School of Arabic and Islamic Sciences, TUF in Mukhtar Auditorium on May 24, 2017. Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector presided over the event. The renowned poets of the city offered their Manaqib paying rich tribute to the teachings of Hazrat Ghause-e-Azam Razi Allah Ta’ala Anho for the Muslims. A large number of students, faculty members and staff attended the Mehfi e Mushaira.
Dissertation/Viva of Students of Optometry, 10th Semester session 2012-2017 was held in Health Sciences Campus, TUF on May 17, 2017. External examiners, Assistant Professor Dr Qaiser Hanif Sheikh, Assistant Professor Dr Qasim Jalali and Assistant Professor Dr Basim Mubarik appreciated the efforts of research supervisors. Students were awarded with certificates for 3 best researches.

Chief Guest, Dr Azam Farooq, Head Department of Pharmacy, University of Agriculture in his address threw light on the importance of the vast field of Pharmacy.
Guest Speaker, Mr Shah Rukh Hafeez, GM, Remington Pharmaceutical Industries Pvt Ltd, in his address told about the role and importance of Pharmacists in the field of health and other related walks of life.
Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences and Prof Dr Faqir Hussain, Dean Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences also addressed the audience and briefed about the performance of the School of Pharmacy, TUF.
Later, the guests visited different stalls arranged by the students of Pharm D, final semester. These stalls were exceptional showcase of the pharmaceutical products with new marketing strategies, all prepared, planned and managed by the students. Visitors appreciated the students’ efforts.
A Mehfil e Milad was arranged by the Religious Society of TUF in The University of Faisalabad on May 11, 2017. The Milad was held in order to commemorate the Shab e Baraat, the night of fortune and forgiveness. Students from different Schools of TUF participated with deep devotion in reciting Naats and Drood Pak. The program concluded with Drood o Salam and Dua.
