MALARIA DAY MARKED IN TUF

World malaria day was marked in The University of Faisalabad on April 24, 2019. The theme of year 2019 was “I raise my hand to defeat malaria”. Speaking on the occasion in his keynote address Prof Dr Zahid Masood, HoD Community Medicine, UMDC disclosed that still half of the world population was at the risk of malaria. Every two minutes a child dies due to malaria. The estimated number of malaria deaths in 2017, at 435 000 globally, remained virtually unchanged over the previous years. Dr Masood further added that an integrated vector control program and community participation was only solution to address the issue. He disclosed that vaccine against malaria (P. falciparum) has been launched and is being used in a few African countries. Speaking on the occasion Dr Adnan Ahmad, District Health Officer Faisalabad said that awareness programs play a key role in the prevention and control of any disease. P. vivax was more prevalent in Faisalabad and Pakistan; he added. He further told that malaria was preventable and curable. He explained the measures taken by the Government of Punjab to prevent and control the menace of malaria. Dr Uzma Sagheer and Ms Maham also spoke on the occasion. Students of 4th year MBBS presented very informative videos with reference to malaria day 2019. A large number of students and faculty members attended the event.
