It was 2nd seminar on Coronavirus conducted in TUF by the Department of Community Medicine. Addressing to the audience, Prof Dr Zahid Masood, Head of Department told that novel coronavirus, which is a respiratory virus, is causing worldwide panic. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses causing illnesses from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Respiratory Syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Coronaviruses cause upper respiratory infections like runny nose, coughing, sore throat, and may be accompanied by fever sometimes. Most people can confuse their symptoms with that of regular cold or flu virus. He also told about the measures to reduce the risk of virus infection. We should clean our hands with water and soap properly when coughing and sneezing cover nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow, avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms, he told. Always eat thoroughly cooked meat and eggs and avoid unprotected contact with wild or farm animals. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death, Dr Zahid added.
