Community Outreach Programme at KDSP Faisalabad Promotes Inclusive Rehabilitation Learning

The Rehabilitation Society, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, organized a Community Outreach Programme on 13 May 2026 at the Karachi Down Syndrome Programme (KDSP) – Faisalabad. The activity brought together students from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Master’s in Neuromuscular Physical Therapy (NMPT) programmes with the aim of promoting community engagement, inclusive rehabilitation practices, and experiential learning beyond the clinical setting.

The outreach programme was led by Dr. Anbreena Rasool, Assistant Professor, The University of Faisalabad (TUF). Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Ali Shahid Pansota, Manager Operations, KDSP Faisalabad, who introduced the students to the centre’s services, programmes, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation model for individuals with Down syndrome.

During the visit, students were given a comprehensive tour of the facility and its specialized units, allowing them to observe community-based rehabilitation services and developmental support programmes in a real-world environment. The activity provided valuable exposure to inclusive healthcare practices and strengthened students’ understanding of rehabilitation beyond clinical settings. A key highlight of the outreach was the distribution of sensory stimulation toys to individuals attending the centre.

These therapeutic resources were selected to support sensory engagement, developmental learning, and participation for individuals with Down syndrome. The interaction between students, participants, and caregivers created a positive and meaningful learning experience for everyone involved. The programme also promoted interdisciplinary collaboration between DPT and NMPT students while emphasizing empathy, advocacy, and patient-centered rehabilitation approaches.

Such activities continue to enhance students’ professional growth and social responsibility through direct community engagement. The outreach programme contributed towards the achievement of the SDGs, including SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The Rehabilitation Society extends sincere appreciation to the management and staff of KDSP Faisalabad for their hospitality and cooperation in making the visit successful. It is hoped that this initiative will further strengthen future collaborations in the areas of community rehabilitation, awareness, and support services.
